I think Shutosh's method is a very good one if you know the exact name of the startup process you want to stop

If you don't know the name of it just the application you want to stop I would recomennd you download Spybot S&D: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Then when you start the program go to
Mode>Advanced Mode
Then go to the tab on the left labeled "Tools" then from Tools click on "System Startup"
Then you will be able to click on any of the processes that are starting up on your PC and it will give you some info on them, such as Name of the application that is starting the process and whether it is malicious or not

I hope this helps you,

The best way to do that would be to load the programs that are starting up and then go to their preferences or options and make sure they don't start up when Windows starts.

Start > Run. Type 'msconfig' and then click on the 'Startup' tab. Add or remove items from the start up list from there.
