What's the benifits to your body of treading water, is it more effective to do this than say, breaststroke? I have just started going swimming again and would like to know what benifits i will recieve from certain ways of swimming.
Thanks in advance :o)

Treading water is short strokes but more of them...this is a great way to burn fat.

When doing other strokes properly they are longer and more forceful, which will couple the fat burning with muscle building/toning

Breast stroke particularly is great for you inner thighs since the kick plays such an important part.

American Crawl (often called Freestyle by mistake) tris and lats and butt & quads in the legs

Fly and back - mostly lats with a bit of tris

The more movement you do, the better. You'll look funny but try running as fast as you can in the shallow end. Water excersise is awesome in terms of resistance without being hard on your joints. Try alternating between treading water and breaststroke (or any other stroke you like). If you alternate like that for say, half an hour regularily, you'll notice great changes.
Good luck!!

Of course treading water for a while will increase leg stregnth especially in deep water but lap swimming would be best to get you into the best condition. try this ... Next time you go to the pool, try to do 10 laps of each stroke and every time after that add on so many extra laps... this will improve your endurance and uses all muscles of the body.... even ones you never use... youll feel better in no time :-)
