You have to build a following. Start small, invite all of your friends to your gig, which will probably be at some hole in the wall bar. Once you get about 50 people who will fathfully come to see you, you can start getting bigger and better gigs. Once you have a good following, you can play wherever you want to.

It would be hard for a record label to pick you up if you don't have a good following. Imagine if the head of Geffen Records comes to see you and there's no one in the audience. Whether you're any good or not, they will not pick you up.

Send CD's to local radio stations, give away t-shirts and CD's at your shows, play shows often, compete in Battles of the Bands, and most importantly, be persistent.

play loads of gigs, send demo cds off to labels and radio stations...
