Um well i have norton 2006 two and its not slow. But maybe it is Norton becuase it has been saying that i need to buy the new Virus protection and since then its been running a lot more and acting slower.
I try to delete some things i dont want n e more and if u want to u can de frag your computer in the control panel. It just reorganizes everything so it runs faster.
Delete trash.
Erase cookies by going to start ,search ,all files and folders, then type in cookies, open a folder and delete everything in it. (there worthless pieces of junk)
200 GB is a lot of space. Your computer should run really fast.
It could be the Quest DSL.... i have Verizon DSL

Your computer seems to be good enough to run fast. Since you have not downloaded anything (or not installed extra programs) on it, we can eliminate the possibility that your computer is overloaded. The only possibility I assure that your computer was affected worms, viruses. Norton Security 2006 is a good tool, but it does not specilize in worms. So, I don't think it can help preventing those.
Here I suggest you:
- http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 Download the program AVG from this link, install, update it.
- Restart your computer in safe mode (press F8 while it is starting). From this safe mode, run Norton first, and wait for the result. Then run AVG, and wait for the result. It if found viruses, worms, just kill them. If they could not find any worms and viruses, there are 2 possibility
+ Your computer is not infected. Maybe the hardware is down, causing it slow. In this case, just a technician can help you out.
+ The viruses are so smart to hide away from the protection program. If so, the only way is to format it, and install window again. If you have a CD of XP, just put it in, format harddrive, follow the step to install the XP. After that, use the driver disk (for all the installed hardware on the computer) to install the drivers.
In case you don't have any disk (XP, driver), the will be a restoration harddrive on your computer. This could be named D disk. Just click on that and follow the steps.

i have a lot of suggestions to make your pc run fast..

1. you said you have a 200gig hardisk..is it partitioned? if not try to partittion your hardisk into 2 or more drive..make 20gig for drive C and the rest is for drive D..(the reason is the bigger capacity of drive C the bigger memory needed..) when you partition your hardisk ofcourse you need to install a new windows..no matter how memory you have if the the primary partition is reall big..it is non-sense
2. how about the memory? if you feel the memory is not enough much better to add more..there are some games needs higher specifications..but 512 is also good but still the size of your hardisk is really big..my suggestion is partition your hardisk
3. antivirus?? did you installed norton ? thise
antivirus makes the PC slow..try AVG or Bitdefender (bitdefender is the number antivirus last 2006)..
4. do you have a lot of progrms installed in your PC? if that try to use necessary software you needed..if too much softwares installed in PC it makes it slow..
5. alwys check if there is a virus in your pc..it is also makes you pc to move or read slow.

i hope it will helps you in your trouble in your PC..
have a nice day!

Upgrade to 2 GB of system memory, 512 MB is a bit too little.

Remove Norton, that is probably your problem. It is a huge resource hog.
