I'm going ton a trip to Egypt to see the pyramids and lots of famous sites. I've heard that some boots might be too hot to wear in the desert. What's the best kind of footwear for this sort of trip?

You might want to consider wearing boots made of tight-woven mesh. Make surethat they have NO HOLES in the mesh. Last thing you want is to have sand in your boots. Be sure also to wear good socks. A good cotton/wool blend is best. Wool because it is supple, and cotton because it wicks moisture from your feet and transport it to the surface to keep your feet dry.

Don't be afraid, however, of wearing a good pair of leather boots. Your feet should be protected from the rigors of the trail regardless of temperatiure. And yeah, it gets hot, but yoru feet are a relatively small part of your body. I get hot in many more places in my body when hiking than my feet. A good hat (maybe even one that covers your neck is more of a concern than the material of my boots. My hiking boots are univeral. They go wherever I hike, and I am yet to regret it. I've hiked in Cali, in Ala, in Mass, in NC and in SC, so I've covered many terrains and weathers. My boots remained the same. I still own my Merrel MIlleniums, and would buy another pair if they still made them.

Any Kind that can not be slippery or not used in cold weather. If you are going to visit the normal places like Pyramids, Saqqara and other famous places, you don't need something special you can just wear a sport shoe and cotton socks. In Egypt you can find heavy cotton socks if you need to buy. Also all cotton clothes or towels are very good in Egypt.
If you are going in a safari trip that you have to stay in the dessert or go over Katherine mountain for example, you will need any strong boot that protect your leg and keep you balanced.
Wish you have an interesting trip and tell us about it when it's done.
