Western (cowboy) films were very popular from the 1940's to the 1960's but very few have been made ever since. I know they have not been made because fewer people appreciate/patronize this genre but why do you think the public's taste has turned away from western (cowboy) movies? Some of the old western movies remain classics like Gunfight at the OK Corral, High Noon etc...and are still shown on TV from time to time so obviously there is still an audience but why aren't many people like the genre anymore?

The last one I remember being made was Unforgiven, and that was a while back. I think a lot of people like sex and more graphic, gratuitous violence which was never a part of Westerns. The most graphic any western got, I think, was when a guy, having been shot, fell from a second-story window, presumably to his death. That's not enough for people these days; they seem to want the gore, the last breaths escaping raggedly from someone's dying mouth. Kind of sad. And to Kumiko, the question was" WHY aren't they popular anymore?"!

There was a Western released only a few years ago called "Open Range" which was an excellent film. Also, there was a Western themed mini- series on a few years ago called "Into the West" from Steven Spielberg and this, too, was very good.
There is a cable TV ("Encore Western") channel that airs Western's around the clock, both old & new.

I think that "Dances With Wolves" changed the face of the Western as we once knew it.

One of the best Western films that I have ever seen is one called "Sergeant Rutledge". It was made in the early 1960's and had Jeffrey Hunter & Woody Strode in the leads.

Because Cowboys are the good guys and I don't think the viewing public knows how to appreciate "good" anymore. They probably think cowboys are hokey or outdated. They did make a recent movie about cowboys, but they were gay cowboys and that sort of took some of the "true grit" out of the standard Cowboy movie, don't you think?

Do what I do when I get the urge to go back in time. Rent a copy of "Lonesome Dove" (or buy one). Then whenever you get the urge to wax nostalgic for Cowboys and their horses, just hit "Play". Ride 'em, Cowboy!!

The westerns are waiting for a comeback. There have been some nice homages to them made by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. But yeah, you're right.. it seems like this genre faded a bit. I think it would be nice to see a comeback, the way "Pirates of the Caribbean" resurrected the pirate movie.

Sometimes they are but not that often. The Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood came out about ten years ago and there were a few other good ones Maybe the box office draw will not permit the budgeting of these. It really is all about the return of the dollar spent.

They are shown on TV because the rights to show them are extremely cheap compared to making and marketing a motion picture.

I liked where Clint Eastwood was going with Unforgiven, I thought the genre would make a comeback but that seemed to be the last one.

There are no more good ideas for Westerns.

Just look at that crappy movie Will Smith made a few years ago - THAT is why the Westerns are dead.
