The answer is really simple... it is because they can! In any case, the typical citizen, with an average attention span of 30 seconds, does not seem to want in-depth, factual discussions on any issue - major or trivial. Furthermore, some of the biggest News channels seem willing to regurgitate as 'the truth' items of 'good news' which are sent to them directly from Administration sources. [The media's excuse when challenged about this deceit is that they do not have sufficient time to check the veracity of all reports.] So if the media are willing to do that, what chance truth anyway?

The so-called 'celebritity obsession' implied in your question is astonishing. Who cares whether actress A has left her latest beau? It doesn't matter one jot. But it does matter when troops in Iraq haven't got sufficient materiel to do their job. But prominently to report the latter, or to subject government members to searching interviews on the issue, would cause embarrassment - and we all know that Administrations do not like to squirm. So you are stuck with trivia such as the Anna Nicole Smith story... Yawn!

You are right. It's interesting how many people will care about something or follow a story because the media have told us we should. It's the same thing with a lot of music. Some of it is very mediocore but it is pumped into our heads so often, we think it's good music. And, have you noticed also that the media really wants to choose our next president? If you don't think so, pay close attention to the political coverage. They are not satisfied to just report, they also want to push and influence the decisions of the people.
As far as Anna Nicole Smith, she is just a sad case of someone who managed by using her body to get herself into a position of wealth and then did not take the opportunity to straighten out her life.

The countries in Europe with the highest standard of living in the world have socialist democratic systems of government ... think Finland, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Denmark to name just a few. They have excellent public education systems and their students perform well above American students in literacy, science and numeracy, they have efficient universal healthcare and social services for all their citizens and they contribute to the well being of others beyond their borders. It's true that their taxes are higher than those in the US where our citizens have to be dragged kicking and screaming to pay a fraction of what they pay. They have as many personal freedoms as we do but a lot less angst. They are not scared of the word 'socialism' like Americans who fear that it is the next step towards communism, fascism, nazism, terrorism, muslimism, satanism or any other 'ism' they haven't even thought of yet! However I don't think we should put all our blame on the media for our ignorance and the dumbing down of America. The fault lies more on our declining standards of education since the Reagan years when it was decided to spend less tax dollars on educating our children ... so sadly, I'm afraid we're now caught in a real Catch 22 situation! (Oh I can already feel the 'thumbs down' coming from my insensed countrymen who don't see the need to change the staus quo and who are morbidly terrified our new president is leading us all towards eternal damnation in a socialist hell!)

I agree that we are being spoon fed utter tripe by the media. But I for one refuse the allow that.

I am constantly ignoring stories on the internet, when they talk about it on tv, I turn the channel, same with the radio or else I'll watch a movie, listen to cd's, read a book or build a dollhouse.

I don't even get mad about it anymore, I just treat it like an advertisement.

She was a poor girl who at the age of 26 married a billionaire oil tycoon, who died a year later. She was on the magazine of Playboy (whoopee doo). She claimed to be another Marilyn Monroe (poor example to follow). She is not any one of great importance, but to some she was. The media doesn't have any thing else to report on.

Do what I do , boycot all media, and only watch discovery, national geographic, and the history channel.

They are at least "less shitty"

watching the news is a choice, if you dont like it, turn the channel

GOD gave us the freedom of choice. America gave us the freedom of the press and free speech. We have the choice not to watch that crap that is on our televisions. We live in a "free" country. We as individuals need to make our own decisions on what we will watch and what we don't. Thank you and GOD bless.

Americans do not enjoy thinking, yet things keep happening in america that need to be thought about. Being brainwashed with useless rubbish is the perfect solution for this.

That's what happens when you allow media corporations free reign over society.

The only alternative is heavy media regulation. But of course, that would be socialist, communist tactics...free speech everyone... baa, baa!
