The customary leave is 6 weeks as long as your doctor releases you. Some women need a longer recovery period. I know that after I had my twins by C-Section, my doctor would not allow me to return at the 6 week mark. I had too many complications after they were born.

This is a tough question. Some will argue that you should take the first 2 years off.
To answer your question I would say as long as maternity leave you are allowed on your job. Use it to the max. I go 6 weeks paid maternity leave but I took off a extra month without pay.

If you are financially stable take as long as you can. The bond you will develop is crucial for the baby emotional growth.

As much as I hated to go back to work after 10 weeks I came to the realization that I must support not only her emotional needs but her physical needs as well and that meant me returning to work to keep a roof over our heads!

I personally think if you have the opportunity to stay until they can go to preschool but that is not a reality for most.

I don't know what American legislation says about maternity leave, but in France you're allowed up to 4 months off (1 month before and up to 3 after). I'd say if you can afford it, take as much time off as you can. I agree with the 6 weeks minimum but if you can take more, I say go for it. Your baby won't be a baby for long and you won't want to miss anything.

Girl, take the leave you are entitled to! Six weeks is the least! I know it's hard to take off work after having a baby, but take as much time as you can! Babies are precious.

I took off 6 weeks but physically could have returned at about 2 weeks. I wished I would have been able to take more time off with my baby though ..

From my experience I would say at least four to six weeks not only so your body can heal but also so your hormones can calm down a bit. I would even stay home a little bit longer for bonding time with your new born. But that is just my opinion .Good luck

With my first baby I went back to work when he was 1 month old and I did fine. But I wouldn't have gone back any sooner than 1 month.

So, I say 1 month. But that does depend on how you heal. Everyone is different.

You should also consider whether or not you are going to breastfeed as when you should go back to work. Your body should be prepared at about 6 weeks, however if you are breastfeeding that's probably not enough time for your breasts to get regulated. Leaking while at work is terribly embarrassing.
