In simpler terms 4X4 (four wheels running, four pulling) wheel drive is a system in which you have traction on the 4 wheels instead of 2 (4X2-Four running, 2 Pulling) you will find in most cars. The advantage of these systems is that you can pull yourself out of muddy or sandy areas. As for disadvantages, more fuel consumption, more expensive to buy and maintain.

All wheel drive is a permanent trasmission on the 4 (or more) wheels. In the 4x4 option the driver can decide whether to use 2 or 4 wheels drive.

4X2 mean you can activate 2 wheel drive instead of 4 wheels drive. 4X4 mean all 4 wheels are activated all the time. you cannot have 2 wheel drive

Front and rear are drive axles, on the 4x4. the 4x2 only has front or rear drive.
