The main problem is the lack of control and regulation over this profession. There were simply too many black sheep, people who do not hold true to the high integrity expected of them. The negative publicity that resulted only made matters worse. Other than the unscrupulous practices of falsely declaring transaction values, we had those who misrepresented facts, obtained kickbacks from lawyers, and put their self interests above that of their clients'.

Lately, with the new accreditation schemes and IEA taking more proactive roles, there is a marked increase in confidence and regard in the estate agent profession. It is too early in the day to know if these measures will weed out the black sheep. One thing is certain, the image of the profession has improved. I am not a property agent, but I believe there is a lot of potential in this area for a person who is responsible and hardworking.
