My 1997 SR5 4runner gas millage has been getting bad for the last 12 months. It is only 15-18mpg now compared to 22-24mpg few years ago. I just replaced spark plugs and air filter but the condition does not seem to improve much. Other than this gas consumption problem, the engine still performs excellently with 158K miles on it.

You did the plugs but you should also do the distributor cap, rotor, and wires, and have the coil checked. Bad spark will definetely hinder gas mileage. Do you regularly check tire pressure? Soft tires hinder gas mileage. Get it off the ground, and make sure the brakes aren't sticking on any of the wheels. Also a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank can only help it. Good luck.

A fuel filter service is simply the act of replacing the fuel filter and when performed at the correct time interval, it serves to protect the integrity of the system. Today's vehicles are equipped with self cleaning fuel injectors and the need for a fuel injection service is a ploy to perform a service that is unneeded. The old type injectors used a multi holed injector head that had about 78 small pin holes in it and was subject to clogging. The newer ones use a conical type head that has a pintle and seat and each time the pintle moves in and out of the seat, it clears itself. The occasional use of a fuel additive to remove varnishing of the support lines and connections is recommended. This is an additive that you can purchase over the counter and add to your fuel tank. If you buy chevron fuel, they use it in their formula TECHROLINE and the use of an additive is again unnecessary. Hope this helps you to understand. As to a couple of turns of the key, when was your last tune up? Have you had the throttle body cleaned, this effects idle quality and early morning start up.

Sounds like you did half of a tune up when you should have done a complete tune up. Like change the wires rotor and cap if it has one. Fuel filters should be changed every other oil change. When you start getting high mileage on a car the gas miles will drop. Due to loss of compression due to wear. This is normal, but regular maintence should help prevent some of this. Air filters should also be replaced every other oil change.

Could be the quality of the gas now-a-days as well. Gas isnt what it used to be.

Being your car is a 97 it would be advisable to change your fuel filter and maybe throw you in a little carburetor cleaner in the gas.

You also can buy octane boost at the gas station that will help your car use the gas more efficiently

It sounds like you need your fuel filter changed and maybe injectors cleaned. Also has your check engine light come on? If it has it could be a o2 sensor gone bad they can affect gas mileage. If the light is on go to Auto Zone and they can check it and tell you which sensor that it is.

Might be a good idea to go ahead and change the plugs and wires as well. Sometimes a slight misfire can throw your gas mileage off too.

Oxygen sensor could be shot. If engine performs well other than gas mileage I'd get the oxygen sensor checked/changed.

never put carb cleaner in a fuel injected engine. use FI cleaner..certain chemicals in carb stuff can hurt it especially if you spray it in the intake..your MAS will burn out.
