I have a tapping noise in my dash of my 2003 Corolla and have been advised that this is actually from the upper suspension mount for the spring on which insulating material must be applied...Is this necessary? Can I live without it or should I have it done? Can I do it myself? How would I do it, if so?

Yes, it is necessary Otherwise your whole stop of strut mount will ride metal to metal on the support frame.

Yes, you can do that easily. Jack up the car on that side and place blocks under it. Then remove those nuts from the TOP mounting area (under the hood). Careful, that assembly will fall down as nuts are removed, so use a 2x4 under there and drop it slowly. Then drop that whole arm and strut assembly down a few inches. You can then reach in there and place a rubber spacer onto those studs. Next drop car down slowly making sure studs pass thru the holes, put on nuts and your are done.

You can buy those rubber pads at Autozone I think at NAPA for sure. Or better yet, make one from a used old tire sidewall. That material is so strong it will last forever.
