And encouraging kids to try stuff for themselves never goes astray.

Do you mean complimenting and encouraging? Making them feel good? If so, you can use these phrases:

"Good job!"
"I knew you could do it!"
"You're very good at that!"
"How creative!"
"You're doing great!"
"I'm impressed"
"Keep up the good work"
"Yay!!!"
"Show me how"
"Can you help me?"
