You can walk out of school on your 16th Birthday, and there is nothing LEGALLY that the School or the Education Authority can do to stop you.

A girl who was in my year at school turned 16 in the December before she was due to take her GCSEs. She did NOT come back after Christmas, she went straight to work in a Hairdressers.

Nowadays you are not released from school until the last week in June - you cannot claim any benefits and your parents will still automatically get family allowance for you. This means that you may as well sit your exams because you can't do anything else

School is one place that you have no say in what happens, wheather home or school, teaching is a must by Government Laws. So they say you have to be 16 before you leave school.
so as far as exams go it is compulsory you sit down to take them, but up to you wheather you fill in application exam forms.
Would be very stupid not to sit exams as it is your future, and nobody Else's, So no experience would only leave you not very bright to be able to get a suitable job later on.

You don't have to take your exams to legally leave school but you do have to be at least 15, beofre you reach that age the authorities can force you back in or send your parents to prison.

You can legally leave school at 15 in Australia, and you don't have to have completed your schooling or have done your exams. They will do their best to try to keep you in school though
