The older son told the doctor that they knew the chemical would kill her (his mom and him) and had discussed it. He did not admit to actually helping her, but said "I left it out where she could find it". The younger son had nothing to do with it. Overall the show was about ethics...I think they did a good job with it.

The younger son had nothing to do with it. But the oldest son, left the container of carbon tetrachloride laying about, because he knew she was suicidal. He didn't actually murder her in the sense that he forcefully poisoned her, but he gave her the means to kill herself so that he and his brother could collect the insurance money and that is definitely illegal.
It was very upsetting, especially since Gates had fought very hard to get Kovac to go along with him on putting on the death certificate that she died of liver failure of unknown cause because he wanted the kids to get the insurance money because he felt sorry for them after what they had been through. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

Only the older son knew what was happening and, yes, I think he helped her. Just the fact that he brought home the chemicals he knew would kill her and the fact that they had discussed it, puts him in the middle. He may not have mixed it with the juice or poured it down her throat but he knew what she would do and supplied the weapon (chemicals). If that ain't helping, I don't know what is!

No. The older brother brought home the liquid she drank knowing she was looking for a way to kill herself for the insurance. He didn't help her. he just put the bottle where he knew she would find it. The Younger brother knew nothing of the whole thing.

There are different values when you look at the matter from different angles. Assuming the mother has a suffering, then they are helping her to die and end the suffering. However in the eyes of law, it is murder.

The older son helped her make the concoction that she drank that ended up killing her. That's why the last seen was so upsetting.
