I bought my XP Laptop in the USA about one and a half year ago and tried to change the language to German ever since. It was in vain. Forget about changing it. You need to buy the language extra things whatsoever it is called.

If you're running Windows, you're out of luck. You'll have to reinstall the English version of Windows to have all the menus, dialogue boxes, etc. in English. The regional settings will only let you change the date format (so you can have the date in English), number format (so you can have prices in dollars/pounds sterling, etc.) etc. You can also change the keyboard layout to english. If you have a Mac, most Western European languages are already preinstalled, you just have to go to the International system preferences and move English to the top of the list. Most Linux distros are set up in a similar way, so you should be able to switch the language there too. Hope this helps!

Most versions of Windows XP are localised, i.e. they are sold with only one language support for most things (buttons, helptext, etc). If you bought your copy of XP from MSDN or got it through volume licensing (i.e. for a business) then you may have the MultiLingual User Interface pack and will be able to change it via control panel.

Otherwise I am afraid you will be out of luck.

If the language on your laptop is
German, is your keyboard QWERTY or AVORAK? In other words, is it an American keyboard or a European keyboard... makes a huge difference in the chip sets.
