Okay, I've always figured it was Springfield, Illinois. Matt Groening the creator of the show created the show while he was in the Navy, he worked in Nuclear Engineering and from there created characters. In fact Mr. Burns is based on the guy who invented Nuclear Engineering. I always figured Illinois because that's where people go when they first join the Navy, my cousin was in the same program as Groening, thus how I got my info. So if he created the show in the Navy, why not set it in the same state as where he created it.

Springfield. The creators have never revealed the state (in fact, it's a running joke that the state is a mystery)

They live in Springfield. In the Behind the Music (Laughter) episode they mention them as a "northern Kentucky" family but it is not definitie that they actually live in Kentucky.
