Hello,

I have just received an estimate of my bill but based on it, I have tried to calculate what the actual bill would amount to and I am horrified. I hope I am doing something wrong in the calculation as it amounts to £400 for two months, can anybody help, please??

My starting meter reading is 4815 and the bill is for two months.
My current meter reading is 5084.
10 units seen to equal to 314.80 kWh according to the bill
I would have used 268 units according to my own meter reading.
Pence per kWh is 4.959

I live in a two bedroom flat with one other person only. Our heating is on timer to go on in the evening (from 7pm to midninght) and a couple of hours in the morning (7.30 to 9.30 am).

Many thanks, I am extremely worried and would appreciate if anyone could help!

call british gas with your meter reading, they will send you a new bill, even they will tell you this is wrong, it should be about £30 a month, tops

I've just done the calculation using the very complicated formula on the back of a gas bill and unfortunately, you seem to be correct as I make it £420.39.
Maybe you've had previously estimated readings which have rolled up? it might be an idea to to a daily reading for a week and see what the result is. If you think it's too much get in touch with them and ask them to check the meter.

british gas are notorious for their poor customer service. I received a bill from them for £600 and I'm not even a customer. Some people don't even ever get a bill! The reading on the meter is correct. Call them up and explain the situation. They may decide to send someone to check the meter, but that's fine. They've clearly estimated wrongly. Definitley the best thing to do is ring them up and give the actual meter reading.

Pick up the telephone and call their helpdesk.
Ask if you can make arrangements for accurate meter readings to be submitted. or ask if you can meet the meter reader once every month to witness the reading, that way it isn't an estimate it is actual.
Try using electric blankets instead of space heating a room or the whole flat.
Far more efficient.

I'm sorry i can't help- i hate them- i pay all my bills on time and online and they won't accept the lower meter reading but can't be bothered to send anyone round to read it. Leave British gas is what i say. I'm leaving british gas and bt for good. They have put up prices and not offered any better service.

Visit one of the online price comparison sites, such as this one at leading financial website fool.co.uk, and you'll see that British Gas are by far one of the most expensive utility providers out there (hence why my Dad told them to get stuffed and switched suppliers for both the house + his grocery store long ago):
