Although both plays deal with the matter of revenge, the main difference in the plays is the way Euripides deals with the domination of male and female relationships.

Electra, although a strong character, does nothing to avenge the death of her father, Agamemnon, until her brothers show up.

Medea, on the other hand, is shown to be far stronger than the male characters in the play (Jason and Creon) and takes matters into her own hands by killing hers and Jason's children in revenge.

Medea often looks like a more sympathetic character especially in comparison with Jason's whiny wimp. She is a woman (and therefore by Greek definition - weak). But, her character seems to be a collection of opposites -- she is magical but unable to keep the love of Jason. She loves her children and almost turns aside from her purpose of murdering them -- but she kills them in the end. The touches of motherly tenderness are in the highest degree pathetic. One website said that "she is a criminal, but not without cause, and not without strength and dignity."
