The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert
* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert
* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman
* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss
* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Starting your own business is hard. You first need to decide what you want to do. Do you want to do something your passionate about but may not have a good market in your area; or are you soley in it for the money. If you are only in it for the money you should probably take a look at what your area needs. If you have seven pizza places in your area, you probably don't need one. You might have to do some general marketing research to see what your town is missing. At the end of the day you need to be able to answer these questions...Why would anyone come into my store and spend their money there versus another store, even if it's not of the same type of business. Also, what's in it for them? What can you offer than nobody else can.

Once you've decided all of that, if you need a small business loan you will need to create a marketing plan. I suggest buying a book or downloadable plan to help you. You'll also need to hire an accountant who can help you get a business license and give you accurate information on how to keep the books.

It's hard work but probably well worth it. I've researched doing this several times, just never got up the nerve. Good luck.
