Some states have a helmet law. If you were belted to a motorcycle it would have a higher chance to flip over on you. Motorcycles are a death trap no matter what.

Well, I've thought about that many times too, how wrong it is to get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt from a cop on a motorcycle that doesn't even HAVE seat belts. And it does suck. But I guess it comes down to the differences in safety expectations between cars and bikes. Where I live, (Texas) helmets are not required by law. Personally, I think that's stupid. But to each his own, right? There are only two kinds of bikers: those that have had accidents and those that haven't had accidents YET. People know that sooner or later, that bike is gonna lay down. Not true in a car. Besides, in a bike, being strapped onto it will actually hurt you more if it wrecks. But in a car, not being strapped in when a wreck occurs is often the difference between walking away and being carried away in a bag. Plus, when your car hits that wall and your body goes through the windshield, you basically become a flying object that can kill someone else. Yeesh.
So.... while it can be annoying, and the laws aren't terribly fair, I've got to say that wearing your seat belt is just common sense. Riding a bike without a helmet? Well...perhaps that's just showing the world how very little you have up there to protect.

Excellent question. MOST states require that motorcycle riders wear helmets, there are only a few exceptions. I believe those exceptions are New Hampshire and a few counties in Florida (Brevard is definitely a no-helmet-necessary zone).
Most states also have laws that you cannot be pulled over SOLELY for not wearing a seatbelt. Meaning, the officer can pull you over for speeding and then toss on the seatbelt ticket if you aren't wearing it but he can't pull up next to you in traffic, look in and see you aren't wearing it and then give you a ticket for it. Florida, unfortunately, is changing this rule.
Personally, I don't think anyone but children should be required to wear a seatbelt. It isn't any of my business if someone else wants to be unsafe. It is only my business if they are putting their children in harm's way.

Seatbelt laws are more about revenue generation than safety these days. It also gives the police another avenue to stop motorists for some unimportant reason to check and see if they are committing a worse crime. If we wanted to really make people wear seatbelts, the law would say that insurance companies don't have to pay out for medical/death benefits if it is proved the person wasn't wearing a seatbelt in an accident. That would catch our attention.

Government always passes laws that save us from ourselves.
"HOG" or Harley Owner's Group pays large sums of money to keep laws on motorcycles to a minimum.
The lady that was the president of HOG was actually killed in a motorcycle accident because she was not wearing a helmet. :D

A seat belt on a motorcycle would be unbelievably dangerous, as it would hold you onto the bike in the event of a spill, and you would at the very least grind your leg away.
But a helmet is a neccessary safety device and it should be ticketable.

Depends on the state you live in . NC has a law for motorcycle riders to wear helmets. But yeah, it does seem dumb, eh?
And even without a law, it's dumb for a bike rider to get out there on the road without one anyway.

The same reason I can be fined (even lose my license) for having my kids out of a car seat or seat belt and it's perfectly OK for the school to have them ride on the bus without them!
