I have been a lifelong Democrat and of late am SO thoroughly disappointed in the party as to have serious doubts that there is any true GUTS left in any of them !! They have all but capitulated on every single issue for years now !! And, in spite of all that you hear from them when it comes down to their allowances OF the things that are transpiring within the policies and procedures of the government of late, they actually fold under far more often than they hold fast to anything !!
There has been a serious need in this country for decades to have a sincere and stable third party--- but--- the opportunity for this has long past--- and we are engrained into a lock down of a two party system that we are destined to be laboring with for the long haul now----- a system that has two sides polarized on most of the more serious issues--- with each locking the other down before allowing anything truly progressive to come through from either side of the aisle--- in a solid attempt to keep "the other guy" from making any progress at all-----without one single view that we are all Americans ---and--- any thing truly good for the country is truly good for both parties !! I am almost certain -- with the atmosphere that exists in D C at the present time---almost every single "law maker" (you realize that they are no longer called "representatives"----at least SOME truth in government here) will discribe themself by their party LONG before they even attempt at labelling themselves as AMERICANS
This is not good in the least---because you now have people far more concerned about their Party than they are about the Country----and this can lead to absolute chaos in the near future !!!
So, No I do not believe the two parties are the same
But I do believe that they are very similar in the actual end-game of how they act and the actual end product that they produce which is bigger government that is less and less responsive to the people !!!

If he said that, I don't think he meant they're exactly the same, but that they are very similar and increasingly so--especially when you look at their ACTIONS, not just their words/rhetoric. Here's a website I found that shows their positions on important issues side-by-side so you can see the difference (or lack of a difference): http://www.therealdifference.org/print.html
And here's an article that helps bring out some of these similarities: http://www.counterpunch.org/junaid07222004.html
As for those answerers who believe every rumor they hear and seem to be under the mistaken impression that Ralph Nader was helping the Republicans or receiving financial help from the GOP--that's not true (unless you count individual registered Republicans who supported him because they like him, some of his positions, and his integrity--I've met some). (Here is where you can read Nader's letter to Kerry/Edwards regarding these allegations: http://www.votenader.org/media_press/index.php?cid=142 . And check this article out for some of the facts: http://www.votenader.org/media_press/index.php?cid=267 )
In 2000 in Florida, many times more Democrats voted for Bush than the number of people who voted for Nader--Maybe Gore spoiled it for himself since he didn't manage to be a good enough candidate to get his own party to prefer him to Bush. Furthermore, if you think the Democrats were actually more concerned about losing votes to Nader than about silencing him, explain why in 2004 in Illinois, the Democratic legislature had to pass a law to allow Bush on the ballot but the same state's dems were working hard to keep Nader off the ballot--or explain why they don't even try to spread the word about instant run-off voting now that they have some power.

I asked about Nader and found out he helped Bush so if he really thought that why did he help Bush? Seems like Nader is a big liar!

I agree in that they both exist as a means to keep EVERYONE at least slightly uncomfortable.
Show me a person who thinks their party perfectly represnts them and I'll show you someone who thinks that more freedom equals more chains.

in some way yes. both parties aren't intrested in helping the working man. when's the last time you saw a political party have a fund raising dinner for less than $20,000/plate?
