If you have internet around then i would say Google Documents and SpreadSheets is the best. Most of the people haven't used it but then It is free and very powerful as it lets you even save the files in the Word 97 - 03 document format or as pdf or as openoffice document just in a click. It is way better then wordpad or notepad.
You can save all these documents online on google and access them from anywhere anytime. Its just great...

You can click Start => Programs => Accessories and find Notepad and Wordpad there I'm pretty sure. Or you could install OpenOffice (a free office suite comparable to Microsoft Office), from http://www.openoffice.org.
