This has happened to my friend a few times for smaller amounts, Ebay are as much use as a chocolate teapot and the police were worse.
He basically got told there was nothing that could be done, even his bank told him that.
Talk to your bank about investigating it and if they don't help there isn't much you can do.
Its a disgrace because the cheque will have had to go into someone's bank account but no one seems to help.
Good luck !

The only protection you have on places like Ebay is to use a credit card for all your purchases. Paypal and Ebay might say they have dispute resolutions and all that, but ultimately none of that will help get your money back. The only thing you can do is file a fraud claim with your credit card company if someone swindles you and they will press charges against that person and you won't be charged.
Never send cash, never send money orders and never pay with a debit card.

A word (or a few words) of caution to people who buy things on ebay: CAVEAT EMPTOR - LET THE BUYER BEWARE.
You can contact the police and press charges for fraud against the seller, but he's probably long gone with your cash and the cash of every other person who's bought anything from him.

Contact ebay and report them - I don't think you can do anything else. You could try your bank but might not get much luck and I don't think it's anything the Police would be interested in. However, you must have their address if you posted a cheque to them. How about writing, recorded delivery and sending a stamped address envelope with your address on it to them with a letter saying you want your money back?

The same happened to me for a laptop I bought one last August and Iam still waitng for it .No replies to my tellers or phone calls, and Ebay suggested I go to the police. But all this as you say costs money and could be a further loss. So I now tell people to forget Ebay

Ebay and Paypal are the people to solve the problem, providing you paid thru paypal.....OH silly me....... you paid by cheque!!!!!...Looks like you can kiss the money good bye unless the sellar is based in the same country as you, in which case you could take out a civil action against them

Was he a registered user and PayPal verified! If not he's probably done a runner.
Post his user name here and let us all know him!
Only other option is to go to small claims court and file a summons against him - you can do this yourself for a small charge and the papers will be served on him at his address! If he doesn't respond he can be hauled before the court on warrant or found guilty in his absence!

if she paid through paypal there is not any way she would have recovered her earnings the previous the dispute is closed, oftentimes you've 10 days to respond to paypal about some added information, in case you probably did not reply she wins and then get her money again

Only the County Courts could you get anything from them, but for that amount I'm afraid it's not worth it. Too many scum bags on ebay. Deal only with those that carry the £500 protection shield in future.
