They carried flour, corn meal, dried beans, molasses, bacon, etc. They sometimes had live chickens so they might get eggs, or eat the chickens. Sometimes they also had pigs, or goats that they could slaughter as needed. They could make flat bread, corn bread, biscuits. They shot game along the way if they could find any (rabbits, pririe chicken, etc.) and occasionally, they killed a cow.
