The claims here are nothing more than cynical lies, promoted by enemies of Israel.
The work is proceeding near a temporary walkway that replaces a centuries-old stairway which collapsed during storms in 2004. The Israeli authorities have explained that the renovations are needed to safeguard the ancient site and have told all the critics that there will be no structural damage to the ancient site or to the Temple Mount beside it.
Yet those facts will not deter the forces in the Arab world that are trying to diffuse and end the intra-Arab warfare. History has taught that in deteriorating situations like the one in the Palestinian Authority, one can always deflect the criticism and blame the Jew.

I have personally spent several years as an American student living in Jerusalem. Much of that time I was in the old city in the very area that is under debate.
I can tell you exactly what they are doing and describe it with my eyes shut.
There is a bridge that leads from the temple mount right next to the Mosque to the entrance to the plaza area.
This bridge is primarily used by non-Jewish tourists that want to see the mount because most Muslims use that entrances to the mount located in the Muslim and Christian quarter.
That bridge almost collapsed during a bad snow storm a few years back. As such they replaced it with a temporary wooden bridge for public safety.
They are now replacing it with a permanent metal bridge that will take up less space. In the process they need to dig around the dirt area next to the mount, but not on it so that they know were to put the supports without damaging the historical artifacts that are located there.
I admit the Israelis should have been more straightforward with what they are doing, but from everything I have read and based on my knowledge of the area I can safely say that this will in no way damage the mosque. If it would the Muslim world as you well know would riot and have already declared war.
If you want I can send you a link from the Israeli antiquities describing what they are going to do.
Shalom and Salam

The situation in those two cultures is so volatile, that sometimes gestures not meant to be hostile are taken as hostile. Its a mess, and a great big dialog needs to be opened up between the two sides so that when a gate is opened up there aren't riots - this actually occurred - an agreement was made to open a gate for the convenience of the Palestinians and when the Israelis did the Palestinians took it the wrong way. Hopefully, over time the situation will improve.

It seems that no matter what the Israelis do or don't do, they are demonized. When work needs to be done and is then started, they are accused of provoking or enciting violence. If they did not do the work and then the area deteriorated and then caused damage, they would be accused of NOT doing anything which lead to whatever damage would occur, therefore again being provacative...
They are "damned if they do, damned if they don't"... Meanwhile the "Palestinians" continue to send their children into markets and malls with bombs strapped to their bodies... If that isn't provacative, I don't know what is....

No but sadly too many think it is.
They are trying to find artifacts around the Wall and the PLO are trying to stop them and doing a good job which is sad.
Anything that the Jewish people try to do it is made to look like they are trying to start a fight.

It's a walkway!!!!! In retrospect, it would have been good to have a representive of the muslim people review the plans before any construction started.
