The only difference is how you choose to worship the God of money.

Abandon politics.

Domino,

This question is getting harder to answer by the day.

Some would say that being a Democrat equals being a Liberal...I personally do not think it's that simple. Further complicating the definition is that the Democrats of Today differs so much from those of Yesteryear...how can the blatant immoral acts of clinton even compare to great Presidents that carried the real torch for the Democrats...men such as JFK and FDR? There is no comparison...where are folks such as these now? These men NEVER backed away from a fighting the "good fight."

Democrats nowdays, in my opinion, have pretty much lost touch with the public at large. They are for big government, raising taxes, and having the body public being dependent on Government as much as possible. It seems their agenda is "Trust us with most of your money, because we are smarter than you and know how to spend it wisely...and you do not." Taxing citizens at an astronomical rate and subsidizing almost every aspect of their lives, and making sure that the money is spread evenly across the masses...is called socialism. The rhetoric that the Democrats espouse nowdays sounds more like socialism day by day.

Republicans, on the other hand, eschews big government and preaches minimal taxation. They say that the government involvement in the day-to-day lives of its citizens should be minimized and folks should be responsible for themselves. Sounds okay, but on the flip side, Republicans stick their noses into folk's personal business a bit too much...for my taste anyways. I don't think government should have any say on reproductive rights, how someone should die, OR whatever 'lifestyle' one lives. If ya believe in minimal government involvement, then butt the hell all the way out, I say. Republicans historically have been strong on defense, and military budgets get cut DEEP when Dems take office.

You seem like a person of strong convictions, and I would discourage taking up the flag of one or the other. Believe in what you believe in, and let NO ONE tell you that you are wrong. Vote in every election. Make sure those who represent you know that you are pleased/displeased with their performance, and keep reminding them that they work for YOU.

Doing these things are much more important than political labels, I think...

Fiscal Conservatives: Low taxes, less entitlements, smaller number of social laws that are more for social control than for violent criminal acts (seat belt laws environmental restrictions on private property uses, and other nanny-state stuff). Most also do believe in a strong national security and support military actions to protect our country.

Social conservative: usually all of the above, along with a strong sense of traditional moral values. Against abortion, the homosexual agenda, and the militant atheist movement. Support rights of religious expression in public (school prayer, nativity scenes on the public square), etc. as above, strong national security is also important

Most true conservatives have qualities of both.

Liberal agenda is usually the opposite of the above. Pro abortion, pro-homosexual rights, anti-religion/atheistic, Supports high taxes and heavy government control, socialist type programs like universal health care and huge entitlement programs.

For the most part, Republicans lean conservative and Democrats lean liberal. There are exceptions, but people must remember that the exceptions usually do not set the agenda of the majority party. So even if a democrat seems more conservative than the republican in a congressional race, a vote for the democrat is a vote to advance the liberal agenda, and visa-versa. That is why it still makes sense to vote straight ticket.

This is a difficult thing to answer, because each of these terms has a variety of interpretations. The best I can do is give you examples of issues and general things among each.

Typically, Republicans are conservatives, but not all conservatives are Republicans. There are two types of Conservative: a social conservative and a economic conservative.

A social conservative is typically pro-life, against gay marriage, and pro-morality measures. This group is mostly what is referred to as the "Religious Right", but that term only refers to the activists in the bunch.

A economic/business conservative believes that government should play little to no role in business affairs. Also, they are typically against government economic assistance, and other programs that interfere with the functioning of the market.

Conservatives also include people that support gun rights and other measures. There are other shades of conservative. There are Republicans that fall into some of these categories, or all. The way Republicans are described are as the party of God, Guns, and Gays; meaning Christian, pro-gun rights, and against gay marriage.

The Liberal side typically associate with the Democrats, but not all liberals are democrats. They are a little bit more difficult to define, but I will do my best.

Liberals have two flavors: pro-individual and pro-collectivism. The pro-individual types are the ones you hear about that advocate rights for minorities, including gays and women and other marginalized groups. They are the ones that advocate political correctness.

The pro-collectivist variety believe that government should be expanded, typically in favor of social programs. They believe Government should provide health care, assistance for the needy and elderly, and other programs.

This is not to say that conservatives do not believe in helping these groups. It means that Conservatives believe that private (non-government) groups can and should take care of these groups, instead of the government.

The divisions between these parties and groups are not cut and dried. Republican and Democrat actually includes awide array of viewpoints. Groups within each emphasis some key issues over others.

For example, there are pro-life Democrats, and pro-abortion Republicans. There are conservative democrats and liberal republicans.

The final difference, which I think is significant, is more philosophical. Conservatives, in general, believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to succeed. Liberals, in general, believe that everyone should have an equal outcome.

I doubt you are 100% of either of those. I am a moderatly conservative Republican. I don't believe in gay marriage or gay acts in general. But I don't want to see any of them hurt just because they are gay. I don't believe in abortion as a form of birth control but I wouldn't abolish it all together, there should be exceptions.

I wish I had the web site for the 'What am I test". It would answer it much better than I can. You took a test that had about 50+ questions that you rated every answer on a 1-5 scale. In the end you position was charted on a XY graph along with all the other people who had taken the test.

Everything is not black and white.

It's not as simple as that. Democratic Senator Bob Casey of PA is anti-abortion because of his personal beliefs. Retired long-time Republican Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming was pro-choice because of his libertarian disposition.

Sounds like you're a conservative on the abortion issue. Maybe there are other issues on which you are moderate or liberal. Only you know who you are.

And by the way, you can evolve your positions over time. It's called growing. Just don't let ad homonym tactics like those of Timo fool you.

Domino, your question is easily answered by asking yourself a few questionS :

If you feel that we are all our brother's keeper and that we are responsible for those who are not ambitious or smart enough to earn a living or misguided enough to have children with little thought for their well being and that every member of our society deserves food, clothing and a roof over their head, even at the expense of those of us who work hard for our money, then you are a LIBERAL.

If you think that the unemployed should get off their butts and make a living just like you did and if they don't them let them live and suffer in poverty, then you are a CONSERVATIVE

If you think that your government was justified to invade Iraq as a get-even gesture for 9-11 and then sacrifice just as many lives in what appears to be a hopeless situation (3000 dead so far with 30,000 civilians killed as well) then you are a CONSERVATIVE and a REPUBLICAN.

If you think that your government should have waited until United Nations and other world organizations agreed to a war in Iraq and that now, recognizing the existence of an unsolvable civil war in Iraq demands turning the situation over to the people of that country, then you are a DEMOCRAT & a LIBERAL.

If you think that a person's body is their own, given to them by God and which they themeselves can dertermine which medical procedures should or should not be performed, then you are a DEMOCRAT & a LIBERAL.

If you think that a group of religious, faith-based people can pass laws concerning what you do with your body, then you are a CONSERVATIVE.

If you are a woman and would like to put bumper stickers on automobiles parked in a Catholic church parking lot , saying:
KEEP YOUR ROSARIES OUT OF OUR OVARIES" then you are a LIBERAL .

Chances are you have mixed opinions on social issues. If so you are in the majority and can proudly call yourself a MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROADER.

Abortion is not necessarily follow party lines, but it tends to be that Republicans are anti-abortion.

Conservative Republicans tend to believe in lower taxes, strong defense, smaller government, and the 9th amendment.

Democrats and liberals tend to want the opposite of what's good for the country.

Don't label you. You are a 'searcher' and they never need a political type. I call myself a liberal, because that's what people see me as being, but i have too many aspects to believe what other people think. I don't call others by any labels, except if they talk trash. Then they are just trash.

This is a excellent question I wish that everyone would ask themselves as they become the age to vote. Its really a pretty easy thing to answer.
Democrats traditionally have put social programs and safety nets for the average American. They look out for the working class.
Republicans are true capitalist who look out for large business, against most social programs, minium wage, social security, working peoples rights and hide behind religion and morals. I honestly believe they are the wolves in sheep's clothing. By the way I am a Independent, because I think money has corrupted the whole political process.
