I tuned 1st string of my student's guitar to E. i doubt its E or not.
I tuned the 2nd string pressing the A on the 1st string.
Problem is with the 3rd string. i tried to tune it pressing the D on the 2nd string.

I tighted the 3rd string to the maximum and found that the 3rd free string is the C in the 2nd string

is this way of tuning correct?
is A of the 1st string and 2nd free string of the same pitch or is it the next octave?

if they are the same, can someone help me with the matching ones in the previous string for the 2nd, 3nd, 4th, 5th & 6th strings coz for eg: there are two A's in the same string... i donno which one out of them.

The thinnest string is called the 1st string. The next thinnest is the 2nd string, and so on up to the thickest which is the 6th string.

Tune the 6th string to E. You'll need to get an E from somewhere to do this.

Pressing just behind the fifth fret on the 6th string, you get an A. Tune the fifth string to this.

Pressing just behind the fifth fret on the 5th string, you get a D. Tune the fourth string to this.

Pressing just behind the fifth fret on the 4th string, you get a G. Tune the third string to this.

Pressing just behind the fourth fret (4th, not 5th) on the 3rd string, you get a B. Tune the second string to this.

Pressing just behind the fifth fret on the 2nd string, you get an E. Tune the first string to this.

The 1st string should now be 2 octaves higher than the 6th string.

Nonononononono
The standard guitar tuning, top to bottom, open strings (i.e., no pressing) is
E - A - D - G - B - E
The top string, the thickest one, is supposed to be E, fine. When you tune it right, and press it on the 5th fret, it gives you the next open string's pitch, A.
The one beneath it is supposed to be A. The open line signal on the phone is A, if you need a reference. Or you can buy a tuner in any music store, probably a better idea. Again, pressing the A string on the 5th fret gives you the next open string's pitch.
Then comes D. Pressed on the 5th fret, it gives you G.
Then comes G and a twist: the next string's pitch is obtained at the 4th fret: B.
On the B striing, you're back to the 5th fret principle, so when you press it you get the thinnest string's pitch, the high E.
So far, when I said fret, I meant the field between two frets.
There is another trick that works for all strings except for G to B tuning.
If you touch the string , for example the top E, lightly above the 5th fret - the metal piece, not the field - and play the tone, you will get a very high and relatively quiet note called a "harmonic." The next string should produce exactly the same note when played like that over the 7th fret. If there is any difference, you will hear a vibrating effect in the sound of the two strings played together like that. Thet';s how you can tune it perfectly right - 5th upper string, 7th lower string - that is, the metal fret after the fields with the markers/inlays.

Final notice:
Tuners produce and recognize a note in all its octaves, so if you overwind, you could, in theory, tune a string to an octave higher of what it should be. The string would be insanely hard then - so make sure you don't do that, the string must be so easy to play that you can play a note and bend the string up or down while holding it against the fingerboard.

your a teacher??? aint the first string the top,,as in the highest,,, as in the one closest to the floor on a standard strung guitar,,,,,,,, buy a tuner, then you can get the pitch,, there is no wrong tuning,, as long as it sounds good to you and you can get where you wanna be in musicland,,, for what its worth its the same pitch on the 5th fret, from the bottom( the low end, the string closest to your face,, the bassiest) on the bottom 4 strings,, then 4th fret on the 3rd string to the2nd string, back to the 5th fret for the 2nd to the 1st string,,E,B,G,D,A,E,, top to bottom ,, hope you got some input here and not more confusion

You can buy an electronic tuner for around $20. That's what I use. Here's a sight that has a downloadable guitar tuner for your pc that works too:
