I'm looking to purchase a new stove. I've never had a stove with the new glass tops. I've heard they scratch easily? Recommendations?

Have been using a glass/ ceramic top stove for 4yrs now. It is easy to clean. You just use a bladed glass scraper to remove any hardened over spill, etc. A soft scrub type cleanser applied with a 'Golden Fleece' type scrubber and then just handi-wipe rinse. Buff with a dish towel. Prefer the darker/ gray type tops - won't show imperfections as much and have not noted any apparent scratches. Took some getting used to. Have to use ceramic or lighter metal pans with flat bottoms. Heat only conducted through the bottoms - curved/wok styles won't translate. Ceramic tops heat and cook faster than conventional above surface coils. The coils are underneath and would recommend you maintain a warranty due to high replacement costs. Also have to remind yourself that it looks like another empty work surface but can't let yourself get into the habit of using it as such for that one time you don't pay attention to the 'still hot' light. Overall I like it.

We just got a new house that came with a new glass top stove. We love it. Spills can be nuisance, but it cleans pretty easily. The only caution is if you have young children, the top stays hot much longer that a conventional top. My mother had a ceramic top stove 25 years ago and it was a real pain in the neck. Had to be scrubbed with special cleanser every day.

I wouldn't purchase anything but a glass top! I had my last glass top for 10 years before I replaced it. Yes it can scratch and needs to be cleaned with special non abrasive cleaner (Bon Ami is what I always used) but to have those ugly coils and then having to take them off and clean in the nooks and crannies....no thanks! I'm sure you will love the glass top!
PS I have 4 kids and they are always banging something onto it and it is very durable!

I love my ceramic top! It does require a soft cleansing scrub that is not too abrasive. You can find that in any supermarket.
