I've decided to add a little rice cereal to my 2 month olds bottle. She has an unsatiable appetite and thats why I decided to do this. My question though is this- how do I go about doing this? Should I use a larger flow npple? Do you just put the cereal right in the bottle? Can anyone help me out with this one? Any information would be great!

You can either add it yourself or else Enfamil actaully makes an AR (added rice) formula. You can also buy nipples with a Y cut in them for feeding babies thicker formula i.e. rice added to the formula. When I had to put it my kids' bottles my pediatrician told me to put in the bottle and then let it set for a minute to actually allow it to thicken up. Working in the NICU from time to time I have actually seen some of the doctors up there having some of the babies rice added to formula due to some digestion problems some of them have i.e. not able to keep food down due to a malformed pyloric spinchter. People hear thickened formula and they think that you mean so thick that it can be eaten with a spoon and this is totally incorrect. It is not that thick, obviously you do not add that much. Good luck. Oh, also my sister used the Enfamil AR because she did not want to deal with adding the rice herself because she too had very hungary babies. They turned out just fine, as did mine, as has every other baby I know that was fed this way.

2 months old is perfectly fine to put cereal in a bottle. get a regular bottle, and put about 4-5 ounces of formula, then put about half a tablespoon of rice cereal in to start her off and get her used to it, you can gradually move up from there, my 3 1/2 month old gets about 1 1/2 tablespoons in hers, so you can judge from that. You will want to get a nipple and cut an x into it, so there is a whole that is not to big and not too small, you can also try the evenflo fast flow for 6+ months later on when you put more cereal in, it has an x already cut. If she gets constipated at first you can give her a bottle of sugar water or a bottle with watered down prune-apple juice, and this will help her digest. Gerber makes it already in a little bottle you can buy. Now all this is ok to do unless your doctor has told you otherwise, your doctor knows your baby. but other than that it should be fine. good luck!

Being as your little one is only two months I would be a little worried that her tummy is now ready just yet to digest the cereal.By giving cereal too soon you can cause more problems. Is she unsatisfied because she's going through a growth spurt? Have you tried adding more ounces to her bottle. Is she frustrated with the flow of the bottle. Maybe you could change the nipple so that it flows faster. Maybe you could talk to your baby's Dr. before adding the cereal to her bottle. If you really are set on giving cereal. Should you not try with a little spoon instead? Best of luck with your decision.

Start off with one scoop per 8 oz bottle and go from there. With just a scoop, you shouldn't need a Y nipple yet. But if you are needing to use more rice, then you may need to switch to the Y. I have used Enfamil AR with both my children and will be using it from the get go with my third.

Like other "issues" people are going to tell you Oh, you can't ever do that!!! Well, this is one that is up to you and that is being done more than ever now. I usually scroll past those answers. It used to be frowned upon, and probably still is by some, but there are doctors now who suggest this to mothers. The point is, not every baby needs rice added to their formula, but your child isn't a textbook baby is she???? You know what is best, and just run it past your doc. Start off with a little and see how it goes.

FYI: I used the enfamil AR with both children, and STILL had to add rice to their bottles. Some kids could eat every hour!!!

I started adding cereal to my babies bottle when she was 2months, she is now 3months as on Feb. 12. Adding cereal just made her more hungry, it helped out at first like a couple of weeks and then it stopped and it will most likely constipate her, it did my little girl.
so please don't add cereal too bottle, it doesn't really do much. I also started feeding cereal to her with a spoon but that was doing any good after about 3-4 days.

I work for a pediatrician she and my sons dr. (when he was a baby) both agree NOT to put cereal in the bottle. It would be best to feed it by spoon, 2 months is kinda soon too, I know how babys get though if I were you I would give the cereal with a spoon 2 times a day, when they get it in the bottle they eat more, the formula has a lot of calories in it. I think if you gave a couple tablespoons mixed with formula a couple times a day that would be better.

I did this with my twins because they had GER and it made it thicker so they would not spit up so much. They wanted to eat all the time. Start with one tsp. per 4 oz of formula. No more than 1 tbsp. Be careful because rich cereal can change their B.M. That is why you should start with 1 tsp and not in every bottle. Try one bottle for every 3. If your baby gets constipated they will tell you to buy some baby pear juice and mix half water and pear juice. You really do not want to introduce pear juice as such an early age. You should not have to change nipples. Make sure you shake well and if it is room temp or warmer it should mix and thin out enough to go through the nipple.

Never put cereal in a bottle, if your baby cant eat it off a spoon then it is to young, it can cause food allergies and could be way to hard on his digestive system.
