My theory is that a much smaller proportion of people in the UK have on-line access than in the US, and those that do tend either to be well educated or currently in full time or part time education. I tend to think that in the USA, access to the Internet is much more widespread among the population, so a relatively high proportion will be lacking in education and literacy in comparison to the UK.
Can't speak for Ireland, but I imagine the situation there is similar to the UK

It is strange that you should ask that question as the other night on UK tv the programme was about literacy.It went on to say that 60% of Americans had poor literacy,so theres your answer.

Due to the fact: that they have probably been brought up with a better understanding of literacy and politeness than many other countries.

a) because we invented the language
b) because we are more intelligent than them
c) because we read books more than we read "National Enquirer"
d) because we don't believe that "movies" are real life
e) because we didn't vote some idiot in to be our leader.

On average we are less techno-literate, more keyboard literate - I expect we'll catch up in a few years.
