Simply because people who identify themselves as liberals and conservatives are extremists or wannabe extremists. They tend to be political cultists who like any cult have no room for the exchange of ideas. Liberals are virtually the same things as conservative in that each is so dogmatic they serve no positive purpose in political discourse or elections for that matter. Libs desparetly need to believe that the religious right elected Bush when it is an easily seen fact that Dem voters crossed over and elected Bush twice simply because the Dem candidates were too far from center. This is a moderate country and that is why few things change radicallly regardless of what the barking dogs in the parties say. Bush did not reverse gun laws, outlaw abortion or do any of the things that leftists claimed would be the result of electing him. He went to war and did it with a Dem majority Congress, though now they must make all kinds of excuses as to why they agreed with him (about ten different times in key Congressional votes). Conservatives think that the US wants to have Christianity imposed as a national religion and are shocked each time its not, and yet there is little support that anything like that either. If American Muslims had the courage to speak up for America and against extremism, it would be a major religion in the US. It may have lost that chance by being silent. Pro life and pro choice are just forums for radicals, people will do what they think is right and elect candidates who promise to do the least harm. No one of any intelligence would identify themselves as a lib or conservative because it just means "I am so stupid that I can hold only one view at a time on any issue". Libs/conservs are one issue people who see the world in the simplest terms, don't mind telling others how to live and they count for nothing in elections because they X each other out. The are just for noise.

And since liberals are never wrong their logic says since conservatives are the opposite of a liberal, conservatives can never be right. I am 38 yrs old.
I spent the first 18 years of my life listening to my grandparents and the Catholic church trying to indoctrinate me into Christianity.
Too much hypocrisy in that institution for my tastes.
I listen to the Bush administration trying to indoctrinate fear of Radical Islam into my life and I feel exactly the same hypocrisy.
Why is it OK to trade freely with China who is just as fear inducing towards humanity as Iran???
Liberalism just by virtue of definition allows for belief in EACH and EVERY idea. In liberalism each person can make up their own minds.
