My son who is a 16 year old basketball player and happens to be in very good shape gets winded fast when on the court. I believe he is so nervous about making a mistake (because the coach will bench him) he does not relax and therefore his breathing is messed up. Does anyone feel that this is the case or could it be something else?

I think it is something else. This is something I suggest. Get him some gatorade and let him drink it and talk to him before the game.

Personally I believe this happens to everybody. However I have a problem with understanding his situation. When I played for my middle school yes I didn't do any playground stuff during the games. I'm not as nervous when I start a basketball game. Before the game I'm looking at the crowd and if I was to give a speech I would be nervous but when I step on that court I just feel at home its just basketball and nothing else matters. So u should tell your son to calm down and tell hin "Basketball that's what matters" he should just be loose and not uptight because your playing the coaches game and not letting natural ability take over.

That is a possibility. He really can't play with one eye on the bench, hopeing he doesn't get pulled. I was in a similar situation when I was in high school, and it really screwed up my game. Nobody can play at their best if they are worried about making mistakes, in fact that usually caused more mistakes. His coach may not understand that (many don't), but you need to try to get this through to him. Confidence is a HUGE part of being a good player.

When playing ball or running on his own is he winded? If so then have him checked for asthma. If not tell him to relax and play the game. If he thinks to much about not making a mistake he is going to make a mistake. And I am sure the coach will not bench him for one error even MJ made errors.

it's kind of normal for someone to be nervous because they don't want the coach to bench them but you have to just not think about that and just keep your head in the game. we all make mistakes so just get over it if you can't handle your coach yelling at you well you don't need to play the game because he's doing that to make you better.

Basketball players aren't supposed to get nervous. She's gotta idealize a situation where her nervousness kicks in over and over, and soon she'll get over it.

well this happens to everyone, just tell him to relax and go with his instincts. No one is perfect, as long as you try its good enough. He can also try and drink some gatorade or water right before the game, it helps alot.
