I am coaching softball at a high school and i am not quite sure how the rules of slidding are.

A head first slide is legal in NFHS play. All other parts of the slide must be legal also, to avoid an interference call.
Also not that a player can not hurdle a defensive player unless the defensive player is completeley prone on the ground. Nor can a baserunner stay on her feet and deliberatley crash into a defender.
Note also there is NO rule which states that a runner MUST slide. There is wording saying she MAY slide, but a slide is NEVER required.
Take it from a certified NFHS Official.

Yes they can slide head first. How can you be a coach and not know the rules? Isn't that part of the requirements of being coach?

Generally, yes, although it depends on who the sanctioning body of the league is, likely tempered by local rules (this is a safety issue for youth ball) and whether or not the league leans more toward rec ball or competetive. Most issues that are not addressed by local league rules, usually defer to the "Major League" equivolent rules for whatever sport for the judgement on the correct thing.

Yes they can slide head first but if you are the coach you need to teach them the proper way to slide.

No. Head first slide is not allowed in girl's fat pitch softball.

it is legal. i have coached fastpitch for 10 years and i have one rule. you slide head first and you are out of the game. to many hand, arm, shoulder injuries.

Yes they are! lol. And generally that's the only way i slide. It doesn't hurt as much! lol
