Watch the growth patterns. Female pot plants thrive on consistant conversation (even if repetitive and pointless), and males grow towards the radiation given off by televisions.

Otherwise, just smoke it and see what the 'dream-masters' from the planet Cheech have to say about it...

The only way to politivly ID the gender of the plant is to wait for them to flower. Females flowers are distinctly different from the male. It's the ladies you want to keep as their THC level is far superior to the male. Grew a little of my own "back in the day". Here:

The female is usually (I hear the jokes coming) bushier, while the male will be spindly.
The female's purpose is to produce seed, therefore, she wants to produce many flowers to make these seeds.
The male's only task is sperm or pollen production to pollinate the seed.
Until the plants have gotten past the "seed leaf" stage it is difficult to differentiate between the sexes.

after the vegetative state is complete the plant will show it's "sex". If the plant is male, small ball like sacks(pollen sacks) will be exposed in the area where the main stalk and new growth occurs.

If female, a small clearish hair will occur in the same area that the pollen sacks occurred for the male plant.

The female plant is the one that gets the "joint" assets (house, kids, cars and a hefty monthly support check). The male is the one that has to pay the support and gets stiffed with the "joint" debt.
