My theory is that blue collar workers identify with hard work with not enough pay so they know that the tips are needed.
I had a dear friend who worked at restaurant in Los Angeles that was frequented by many well known Hollywood stars. Some were generous tippers, having perhaps worked as waiters themselves once and have not forgotten from whence they came. Others, tipped meagerly or not at all, honestly feeling that the privilege of having served them was more than enough.

The people who appear the richest are likely the best at appearing rich. There are more real millionaires living in bungalow homes and appearing to be blue collar. The reason the ones appearing rich do not tip well, is their lifestyle is close to the edge. They have little money and many debts to support their APPEAR RICH lifestyle.

I like to give tips to rich people. Sometimes I just hand them money for no reason just to see thier response. Of course I am filthy rich myself so it is ok. I never give tips or money to poor people, they need to stay poor so I can remain on the rich side. If they should get more money then my standing as a rich person will suffer. I just threw $10 down the garbage disposal, just to hear it rip and tear. I'd bet there is a poor person somewhere that needed that cash. I think I'll do it again and record it so I can put it on YouTube.

The richest are the poorest tippers, because they are expected to give the maximum charity, from all sources and and only they know how little they can give and why1

I've always found black and hispanics to be the worst tippers, even if they spend a lot on the dinner (you know they have the money).
I have always found white men to be the very best tippers.

They are the worst tippers because they never worked in the service industry. Anybody who has ever tended bar, waited tables, bussed tables etc. knows how tough it can be and they are by far the BEST tippers.

Because being a poor tipper is typical for people who tend to be stingy. And stingy people tend to save a lot. And people who save a lot tend to become richer then people who spend a lot of money.
So it's not that people don't tip because they are rich, people become rich because they don't tip.

most "rich" people have never worked in the restaurant business... or even socialized with someone who has. so many of them have no idea that some servers make as little as $2.15/hour before tips. i think restaurants should post their servers wages on the door and suggest a big tip as the customers walk in. or just put mandatory gratuity on everyone's check. i agree with you, though.... it's not right!

rich people give less tip than poor because they don't know how it is to be poor and they can't imagine that the little tip the give could help you to buy your bread for the next week.
