Reality shows are "NOT" reality. And yes, they are scripted - even if they swear up and down they they are just being themselves. Prodcuers aren't stupid and don't want to waste film if the "subject"'s energy is low and they aren't takative that day. I know this for a fact because I was a Director of Photography (That means "Cameraman" on a few of these shows. ( We've cut - and reshot scene if a director thought there "wasn't enough passion in that argument") There is a lot of "downtime" when filming these shows - meaning nothing is happening. Of course we aren't going film those scenes. Then when the final project is complete - it goes to the editting room just like any other film or TV show. Only we edit it to add more drama and take things out of context to keep views hooked on the show.

Why do the networks do this? Because it costs very little money to make these shows. REAL TV shows require a sound stage (which costs money) Craft service/Catering (more money) a set (materials for building and decorating a set costs money - not to mention you have to pay the salaries for the carpenters who building the set and pay the set decorators. Next you have a wardrobe department. First it costs money to buy or rent clothing for the lead actors. Then you have to pay the salaries for the wardrobe people, hair and make up. Then you have your crew of about 100 people after that. Last but not least, you have to pay all actors who are in the Union. Unfortunately, this is a job for them and the expect to earning a living - not to do this for the 15 minutes of fame) Usually it's the Producers who are the writers - so they are not paying real writers. It's cheap to make these reality shows, but they make a fortune for the networks because idiots out there believe these shows are real!!!! And Coke, Pepsi, WalMart are wiling to pay top dollar to payfor commerical spots for these shows because these companies think: If they are stupid enough to watch these fake reality show - they are stupid enough to believe that these diet pills will make them skinny."

These shows are NOT real - no more real than "Friends" or "Law & Order". NOT REAL. Not even the "Actors" are real. They are all "wannabe" actors or "wannabe" famous". I take whatever job I can get - but these reality shows only make greedy corporate America and the Producers rich. Everyone else loses. THe people on these shows have no control over how they will be portrayed and the sign an agreement that they are giving away their right to their own image. In my opinion, people should stop watching these fake shows. You are making Companies like NBC, ABC, BRAVO, CBS and all those producers fithly rich, while the people who are exposed on that show - get a token prize but, no residules, so once that money is gone - that's it. Even if they re-air the show those "stars" have signed away the right to their image. The often find it hard to get a job after that because they were portrayed as "The Slutty one" or "The mean one" or "the Lazy one". I really wish America would stop watching these shows.
