I've been at my current job for about 2 and a half years. I've been a model employee, punctual, hard working, eager to please.

But lately I've had a series of unfortunate events. My kids got sick so I had to take leave to care for them. Then my babysitter got sick and I ultimately had to dismiss her and get a new sitter. My car died a sudden and horrible death of a blown head gasket. I had to buy a new car. I also just bought a house and I've been trying to get moved into it.

My boss is comparing me now to the bottom of the barrel of my office mates (no call no shows for weeks at a time) and it really disturbs me. I've called an communicated throughout my ordeals, worked from home, anything I could come up with to lessen the impact of my abscenses.

What should I do? I'm starting to get back to normal but my boss is treating me like garbage. He says he wants to help me advance but I'm really hating his approach.

This happens more than what you probably think! Unfortently their is not a perfect answer for your question either.

I will start by saying in today's work field it is a "candidates market". Meaning their are more jobs available for specialized fields then their are QUALIFIED applicants. Because of this many employer have adopted great policies known as "flex time", "telecommuting"- which is essentially working from home, and personal leave- which typically does not require advance notice.

It appears to me with the little knowledge I have about your current situation that your employer is not a great one. My first reaction would be to say find a new job at a new employer or transfter departments to an area where you would have a different manager.

The effort that it takes for you to get back to a "top employee" in your managers eyes might not be really worth it. If you have had a few bad weeks and 2 great years and your employer is giving you grieve then it is obvious to me that they don't understand that their employees have lifes outside of work.

Hear is my only warning. You need to keep working as hard as you can while you searching for a job because you're going to need either your current or past supervisor and co-works as references. Most companies will want approxiametly 3 work related references with some flexiblity on who that might be.
Work hard and see what is out their- it can't hurt!

Well, that is how most bosses are they take advantage of you and then when you have "issues" they complain... I am going through this now pretty much similar to you. And for 3 months I gave up my "life" to take care of his business. Now, I am having problems and he is like I have so much stuff that it is unfair for you to take off. I've already told my boss that if you don't like the way things are to fire me. Due to advancement, which here is none, I am always looking for employment else where. Maybe you should be doing that too.

you have to put yourself in the postion of your manager he thought you are lazy and in general all managers don't like excuses specially when it is too much at least for them and when also all other employee doesnot have excuses

my opnion is you have to put a break to get his confidence back
and tell him that after this break point there is no more excuses
and promise him with a target in job better than before
and convince him to give you a chance and forget all the problems that happened to you and start a nre begining to give you motive to work as hard as before or more

if you really like what you are doing keep at it especially if things are getting better you just had a little bad luck. sounds like your boss likes you but sometimes they like to be assholes and make examples out of you. just suck it up and let him think hes a big man if your attendance gets back to normal and he doesnt back off ask him what his problem is. i think if he didnt have hope for you you would have already been fired. your decision
