Substance abuse - alcohol the worst, drugs (prescription and non) after that.

Wish I had an answer as to what to do. Alcohol is legal; narcotics are not. Some suggest legalizing narcotics to bring down the market value and take the big money out of it (i.e. make it much less attractive to people to become involved in the drug trade). But even though the re-legalization of alcohol after prohibition took the making and selling of the substance out of the hands of organized crime, it didn't do away with the fact that millions of people are addicted to the stuff and it still impairs judgement and is the root of much anti-social behavior. I cannot think that legalizing narcotics would be a good thing; we'd just end up with a generation of junkies who were unable to perform the basic functions of a modern society.

Perhaps we have to take a closer look at root problems: why do people get drunk or stoned? Many imbibe recreationally, but too many imbibe to escape themselves, forget about their problems. Deal with the core problems of society and I think not so many people would resort to getting drunk or stoned. MHO.

its been my belief that any and everyone is entitled to their vices. but there are three simple and VERY important factors to consider.
1. Health... if your health is suffering due to the usage of whatever vice, you have a problem. solution? stop.
2. Work... if you're unable to perform properly or effectively at work, or if you're unable to pay your bills, etc. due to the usage of whatever vice, you have a problem. solution? stop.
3. Personal relationships... family, friends, partners, passers-by, if the people around you are being affected in a negative fashion due to the usage of whatever vice, you have a problem. and you're making problems for people that are undeserving. solution? stop.

it doesnt matter what addictions, habits, or rituals we face, they're all fixable with the genuine want by the person to do it. if anyone knows that by elimating unnecessary stress it can lead to sublimation, than the problem can be made not a problem. it takes faith in ones self to overcome. and an absense of selfishness to release the evils.

and yes, i genuinely believe that it is as easy as it sounds.

I do think that you need to move on. You had an 8 month relationship a year ago, and it's over. She was probably your first love, so you will always have a piece of your heart reserved for her. However, you need to stop letting it take over your life so much. I understand that you have tried to move on, but sounds like even when you were dating others, you were thinking about her (which is probably why those relationships didn't work out). You need to stop thinking about her so obsessively. There are techniques to stop obsessive thoughts. Whenever you think about her, remind yourself that it's over. Repeat as necessary. I know it hurts, but if you let yourself let go, it will hurt less and less. And then perhaps, you will really be open to letting another woman in to your heart. GL.

In New York - lotto. More money and lives are wasted on lotto than drugs. Some people actually call the lottery their 'investment" - how sad is that.

Easy solution - State government should not be in the gambling business - plain and simple.

I agree with webbrew. Everyone wants to pass the buck onto someone else. We need individual and global responsibility. I think we should teach our children from an early age about responsibility, and hopefully they will grow up and teach their children and so on.
