Marks & Spencer have announced a plan that will lead to the company becoming carbon neutral by 2012. Is it a marketing ploy or path to sustainability?

It's a nice promise but you have to look at the size of the window they've given themselves. Five years most likely means that they haven't done enough research and have no real solution in place yet.
Certainly there are solutions out there but it's going to take time for research, decisions, planning, bids and, actual construction. I have yet to come across a board of directors that will stand for a reduction in profit much less a net loss.
Given my experience in the field, the only way to meet this deadline is to simply divest all of the manufacturing branches of the company and simply use them as exclusive vendors.
This is a Bull--doo solution as it really doesn't solve anything, but they can leagally claim carbon neutrality this way.
