What happens if they don't? Rivera has already said that the Yankees either get it done now or he'll walk after the season is over. What's your thoughts?

Well, what Rivera has said is that he will consider offers from other teams if he becomes a free agent and the contract situation is not resolved before the real season starts. And I imagine that that's exactly what will happen if the deal isn't closed during spring training: he will talk to other teams....and end up with the Yankees. Rivera has repeatedly made it clear that he doesn't want to don another uniform, and with the new stadium opening it's clear he wants to stay in a Yankee uniform long enough to play in the new stadium before calling it quits.

I don't believe Rivera will go to another team, even if there is no contract extension before the season begins. He doesn't want to go....and they don't want to let him go -- of that I'm sure. I'm also sure that Steinbrenner went through the roof when he heard Rivera say he'll consider offers from other teams....that's just the type of thing Steinbrenner thinks is the equivalent of stabbing the franchise, and him personally, in the back.

He never said he WILL walk...he just doesn't want to deal with contract talks during the season and would have liked one before the season started. He'd be fine talking about it at the end of the season, his agent seconded that point. The Yankees will have a window of negotiation time at the end of the season before other teams are able to talk to him. The same way it worked with Mike Mussina at the end of last season. They banged out a contract before he was an unrestricted free agent. Rivera said that if it goes past that point then the Yankees will have to wait in line like every other team with no advantage. The Yankees will never let him go though, they will give him whatever he wants as long as he shows that he is healthy and productive. They'd rather pay him 40 million at the end of the season than 30 million before this one starts. I love Rivera but this is a business and he signed a contract that ends at the end of this season so it isn't unfair that they wait until the end of this season to deal with it. If they gave him a 2 year, 30 million dollar contract and he gets hurt this year he isn't giving the money back. Cashman won't be able to tell the Boss "Hey we owed it to him anyway."

No way. It's a long season and it'll probably get done during the season. He's not going anywhere.
