The Filipino is basically of Malay stock with a sprinkling of Chinese, American, Spanish, and Arab blood. The Philippines has a population of 76.5 million as of May 2000, and it is hard to distinguish accurately the lines between stocks. From a long history of Western colonial rule, interspersed with the visits of merchants and traders, evolved a people of a unique blend of east and west, both in appearance and culture.
The Filipino character is actually a little bit of all the cultures put together. The bayanihan or spirit of kinship and camaraderie that Filipinos are famous for is said to be taken from Malay forefathers. The close family relations are said to have been inherited from the Chinese. The piousness comes from the Spaniards who introduced Christianity in the 16th century. Hospitality is a common denominator in the Filipino character and this is what distinguishes the Filipino. Filipinos are probably one of the few, if not the only, English-proficient Oriental people today. Pilipino is the official national language, with English considered as the country's unofficial one.
The Filipinos are divided geographically and culturally into regions, and each regional group is recognizable by distinct traits and dialects - the sturdy and frugal llocanos of the north, the industrious Tagalogs of the central plains, the carefree Visayans from the central islands, and the colorful tribesmen and religious Moslems of Mindanao. Tribal communities can be found scattered across the archipelago. The Philippines has more than 111 dialects spoken, owing to the subdivisions of these basic regional and cultural groups.
The country is marked by a true blend of cultures; truly in the Philippines, East meets West. The background of the people is Indonesian and Malay. There are Chinese and Spanish elements as well. The history of American rule and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of East and West, both in the appearance and culture of the Filipinos, or people of the Philippines.
Hospitality, a trait displayed by every Filipino, makes these people legendary in Southeast Asia. Seldom can you find such hospitable people who enjoy the company of their Western visitors. Perhaps due to their long association with Spain, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.
The Spaniards introduced Christianity (the Roman Catholic faith) and succeeded in converting the overwhelming majority of Filipinos. At least 83% of the total population belongs to the Roman Catholic faith.
The American occupation was responsible for teaching the Filipino people the English language. The Philippines is currently the third-largest English speaking country in the world.

There are many things that stand out to make the Filipino different from other Asians:
:the written word uses English characters e.g. Thai or Chinese,
:the spoken word is not a high pitch sound e.g. Vietnamese,
:the fact that English is widely spoken and understood,
:the fact that it is the only Christain country in all of Asia,
:a vast majority of the population has mixed blood which enhances the beauty of different cultures,
:it is a Republic,
:it is not under Communist rule or influence,
:its' people are both friendly and hospitable.
Koalafamily2 I have never heard of Filipino's being referred to as "Pacific Islanders" and compared to Samoans, Hawaiians and Fijians. It's like comparing chalk and cheese.
Both are so different. The majority of Islanders have frizzy hair and it would take at least 3 Filipino's to make 1 Islander. Their average size and weight is enormous.

I think Filipinos are a jumble of asian culture, spanish culture, and american culture..... Personality-wise, Filipinos are very Happy-go-lucky people (this is true) who always laughs at even the most unlaughable matter and even jokes about how broke they are.... And, strangely, treats shyness as a virtue.... A Filipino would rather shy away when done a favor and would try as best as he can to pay ten times back... Or try his best to refuse being given the favor in the first place... I think these things make them a very comely and humble race...

Firstly, you have to qualify and clarify the areas where Filipinos are different from other Asians.
Culturally, I'd probably say yes, the Filipinos were different 20-30 years ago. But with the advent of internet and cable TV, you might say that the youths of say Singapore are anything but different from the youths of the Philippines today.

CULTURE. I mean, we don't look different from malaysians or thai or other asians, what makes us unique is our culture, which is over 500 years in the making. We are largely a catholic asian country so most of our traditions are influenced by religion. Also, by the different countires who conquered us - Spanish, American, Japanese. And by the people who live among us - Chinese, minor population of Europeans, etc. So what we have at the present is a blend of these traits, what we absorbed portion by portion from them. Over the years those traits have been incorporated in our daily lives and norms, and now collectively identified as Filipino. LANGUAGE is another identity. And geographically, we live in an archipelago, a group of islands called PHILIPPINES... that's what makes us "filipino".

Honestly, I do think filipinos look more hispanic. However, the same case could be said with Thais or Cambodians. But that doesn't make filipinos more unique or sexy. Sorry, but just because you have more spanish influence does not mean you're more unique or sexy, lol, that's rather ignorant way of thinking.

To elaborate on the Pacific Islander vs Asian, in the states (or at least the Bay Area where I am from), Filipinos are more often considered Pacific Islanders instead of Asian. On application forms (school, etc) if Filipino is not an option, most people will check Pacific Islander before Asian.

The Philippines can claim its uniqueness as the only Christian country in Asia because over 90% of the population are Christians. From the figure of over 90%, 83% of these are Roman Catholics, 9% are Protestants, 5% are Muslims while the remaining 3% are Buddhists or belong to other religion groups.

RELIGION.... They are the only Christians in Asia and that, alone, makes them very similar to us in Europe and America. -- Religion dictates a people's culture so I feel quite at home in the Philippines. Particularly interesting on Sundays when they all go to Church for mass... as we do in the West. So I think that is what makes them different from others in Asia and very similar to us in Europe and the USA. They are a great and W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L people who still retain a lot of what we in Europe have already lost.... a thirst for morals. Love ya guys !!! ( white English guy )That is abot the peole. About the country... beautiful BUT IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE IN DURING THE HOT AND HUMID SEASON... I need to take 5 showers a day.... otherwise I DIE. Do you know that 5 minutes after a good shower you need another ??!!!! If you think I am exaggerating... GO THERE !!
