To hit the ball with power (like in most shots) you hit the ball with the laces of your boot. When you're doing this, you should keep your head down, not lean back, and get your knee over the ball when you make contact. This will prevent getting too much air underneath the ball and overshooting the goal. ...I'm with you on the instep question. I've heard different people use that term to mean different parts of the foot, so I find it confusing too.

Regarding defending, if your opponent is dribbling towards you, jockey him toward the sideline by angling your body toward the sideline. That drives him away from the goal, where he can do the most damage. Don't try to swing at the ball because he's waiting for you to do that so he can make a move and dribble passed you. Just watch the ball, moving slightly toward him and away from him, while being ready to stick a foot out to block the ball if he tries to dribble passed you. This will slow him down and allow your teammates to come help you defend. Then when he finally makes a move to get passed you, kicking the ball forward, stick your foot in to knock the ball away from him.

Good luck, and have fun!
