In most states, you can agree to pay the fine in order to avoid court and you might have the option of going to traffic school. If you want to fight the ticket, you need to go to court and plead not guilty. Hiring a lawyer is up to you. Some people know how to right traffic tickets, others do not. It really depends on how important it is to get the ticket off your record...an attorney might cost more than the fine.

In Florida, the citation lists the options which may have a time limit for compliance, or the Clerk of Court in the jurisdiction where the citation was received can be contacted for information. There are many civil citations which can be issued by law enforcement, and therefore a course of action may be dependent on this.

either pay the ticket or go to court. If you go to court and plead
not guilty, the court will appoint you a lawyer if you can not afford
one.
