You would counsel the individual patiensts to intellectually react to their problems in a different way, giving them coping strategies for whatever their problems were.

I believe that cognitive therapy is effective in a one on one therapeutic approach. It is directive in that you show the client where the faulty thought processes are and allow the client to correct the maladaptive thoughts. In a care setting it would be beneficial but time consuming. There are different and I have included a website for more info. I think that a mixture of gestalt therapy/cognitive therapy is the most effective, but you have to use the right mix.

At best I see it as a panacea. Cognitive Behaviour therapy--the term coined I believe by Meichanbaum--is supposed to help us understand our emotions by considering them objectively as we feel them, i.e., am I perceiving things accurately or am I seeing them through the lens of conditioning. If it is the latter, supposedly you can change your attitude and hence your behavior. This is a theory, however, and one problem with it--according to my research is that emotions reach the amygdila, which is the seat of emotions in the brain faster than thought reaches the cerebral cortex, so in the race to gain control over emotion, emotion wins out. In a care home (nursing home?) maybe since the residents are more restricted phsycially, they could learn to take the time to reflect back on their emotional responses in a moment of 'tranquility,' something many of us don't have the luxury of doing. Nevertheless, Meichanbaum is from Brooklyn, so that immediately gives him intellectual legitimacy in my book.
