you don't need to cut the line, what you need is either a hub or router or second ethernet....or use a serial cable or crossover cable. or go wireless

You can't simply "split" an Ethernet cable... it just doesn't work like that.

There are two ways to share an Internet connection:

Use a crossover cable to join the two, then set up Internet Connect Sharing.. but this will require one of the PC's to have two network interface cards.

Far easier is to buy a router. This will connect to your existing Internet feed from the cable/DSL/etc, adaptor, and your two PCs will connect to the router, which will do all the address translation, sharing etc, for you.

A simple router will only set you back $30 to $40 in the US, or something equivalent in your local currency... and most are very simple to set up. In fact, most will run straight out of the box..

Simply turn everything off, unplug the cable from your PC to modem... connect the router to the modem, using the cable they included. Connect your PC's to two of the ports on the router.

Turn on your modem, wait two minutes.
Turn on your router, wait two minutes
Turn on your PC's.

In the majority of cases, everything should be up and running.

If you want to make a connection directly form one pc to another, the best way to do it its to get yourself a crossover cable or make one if you have the tools.
