Hi, I'm thinking of going on the injection, but I need to have a wee bit more information about it. A couple of years ago, I was on the pill but in the end had to stop as I hate taking pills and starting to dread it. I can be susceptible to depression, but I'm beating that on my own now anyway. I just wanted to know about side effects now and future and how safe it is to take? Someone said something about brittle bones? I don't know. Please, if anyone can give advice on this or any other contraceptive (bar the pill lol), it would really be appreciated. Thanks.

What about the implant?

By the way, I don't smoke either, if that helps! lol

if you are susceptible to depression do not go on the shot. I was on it for 4 years. from the time I was 15-19 and I want to have a baby now and It can take up to 6 months to get your period back and another year after that to have a baby. some women cant have babies at all now and some have waited 5 years and still havent concieved. the shot is horrible! I loved it at first.,.it was wonderful to not have to take a pill everyday..but it isnt natural for your body to not have a period. what the depo shot does it stop your body from producing as many hormones so you stop your period and stop giving off eggs. so when you do come off of it your body is so thrown off by the lack of hormones that when your body tries to go back to normal you will be an emotional wreck. and going on the shot..you will have an abnormal period for a few months then it will be gone...but even though your body is lacking in hormones..you are still 4 times as emotional as you would be on the pill. and you have to watch what you eat because you can gain weight like CRAZY! i've known people that have gained 30-40 pounds on it..but me..I only gained 10 and that was after 2 or so years the first year I lost 10 pounds..then gained it all back. I also am against the patch...there is something really strange about medication on a patch..I wouldnt trust that at all..something needs to either be injected or taken by pill for me to feel safe..and the ring...one of my friends had it come out during sex and her boyfriend found it! how is something like that supposed to protect you if it can come out! scary..so your best bet is sticking with the pill...sorry...but I pray to god you dont have to go through the same thing many os us have had to go through being on and off the depo.

DONT GO ON THIS, this injection isn't sutiable if you suffer from depression. I would be very supprised if any one would let you have this due to the chance of it making your depression worst. It can cause brittle bones so don't have it if your mum or grandmother have osteoparosis. Also don't have it if your thinking of becoming pregnant soon as it can take a long time to get out of your systam, and if your prone to putting on weight you are likely to put on weight on this injection. There are good parts of it though not having to remember to take a pill and not having periods. But please disccuss the risks of the injection worsening your depression with your before you have it.

Just something to consider:

When considering a new contraception away from the combination pill, (due to being sick and tired of the constant tablets!) I thought about the injection, but didn't like the fact that if you had any adverse side effects or reactions to the injection, there was no way of getting it out of your system until 3months!!

I decided on the Ortho Evra Patch, which is working great for me...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ortho_Evra

The depo-provera shot can cause depression to relapse and it doesn't wear off for another three months and it does cause bone loss and can often cause irregular bleeding. It is also the only contraceptive method proven to cause weight gain. If you can't stand taking pills regularily, ask your doctor about the Nuva Ring. It's a ring you insert into your vagina for about 3 weeks and then take out to have your period. The hormones are a lower dose than the pill, but you'll have to keep aware of depression symptoms.

i also can be susceptible to depression so i was wary to get the injection.i did get it tho you are advised to only have it for 2yrs at the most as it increases your risk of brittle bones in later life.I found the injection so much easier and it stopped my periods all together which i thought was great LOL .everyone is different tho i just wish that they could make one that you can stay on longer i hate taking the pill(tablets) to.

Apparently I am the only one here who was pleased with my Depo experience. I was on the shot for almost 8 years and I never had an issue. I might have put on 5lbs in the course of that time. I found the shot very convenient and I had no periods at all. The only reason i am not still on it is because I had my tubes tied. I wish you the best of luck in whatever method you choose.

Maybe I'm just a little over sensitive to meds, but this is how the shot made me feel. I felt like I was going out of my mind when I was on it. It felt just like when I was pregnant (overly emotional and mood swings,ect..) It seemed like it gave me anxiety. Well, exactly 12 weeks to the day after that (when they say it wears off), I felt 100% better. It didn't give me the nausea like pills gave me (that's why doc had recommended it), but I felt like i was going to murder someone instead. Birth control sux and I wont take it no matter what!

i was on the injection for about 16 weeks in which i bled more than half the time... i was so depressed and there was no way to stop it as the injection was already in my system and so i had to let it run its course while taking iron supplements.. see your doctor for the best type for you. this will depend on your history and health. the pills have side effects too but it depends on what you can manage... good luck
