I'm a career changer, and I'm going back to school to get my pre-med reqs. I'll be about 30 years old when I start medical school. Will I be able to handle it and compete with students younger and smarter than me?

Hahaha, you're not going to be that much older than the majority of your classmates. Don't worry about age that much.

Just because they're younger, doesn't mean they're smarter.

Worry about getting in period. Getting in to med school is no sure thing. It is a VERY hard thing to do.

Your first problem is to get admitted to med school, not to worry about whether you can compete when you get there. If they admit you, then they have made a judgment that you will be able to succeed. What you need to do is to give them the evidence to make that decision.
You are going to be taking chemistry, biology, biochemistry, calculus, etc in classes with smart 19 year olds who have just finished taking AP chem and two years of calculus in high school. When did you last study calculus?

The advantage that you have is your maturity, your skill at avoiding distractions and getting the job done. The 19 year olds are busy learning to drink and fighting their hormones! If you can out-concentrate them, then you will get A's in these hard courses and they will not. That's how you will convince the med school guys that they should give you a seat.

Well, you can expect to be farther ahead in your medical career than if you wait until you are 40.

And why would you assume that anyone would be smarter than you merely because they are younger? You may not have youthful energy, but you should have wisdom on your side.
