As football evolved in the US to what we now call football, the folks playing the original game would form various associations based on there immigrant group or neighborhood. Thus, they were playing Association Football and then that term evolved into Soccer.

Soccer is an abbreviation for Association Football. The Football
Association was formed in London in October 1863 when representatives
of eleven clubs and schools met in an attempt to standardize the rules
of the game. One of the rules prohibited the carrying of the ball, a
rule that would lead to the Rugby-oriented clubs leaving the
Association several months later. The name Association Football was
coined to distinguish it from Rugby.

By 1889, the abbreviation socca' was in use, and the spelling soccer
had made its appearance by 1895."

The continued use of the word made it easier to differential between that sport and American Football which was gaining much more attention and interest from the people in the US.

It is just a name. It really doesn't matter as long as you know what they are talking about. I know it is confusing in mixed groups...that is why you have the "american" when dealing with an internationally mix group. It isn't that hard to distinguish. It would be nice if we (we meaning "Americans") are a little more sensitve and try to distiguish when we are in known internationally mixed groups.

I wouldn't have any problem, now that the world is smaller and football (soccer) is now a common term and has been around longer than american football, that we try to give it a new name to distinguish it. I know Americans are stubborn and wonder why we should change...but it just makes sense. That would be a better question...What should American Football be called to identify itself from soccer/football?

If soccer is not soccer and instead it's called football... then what is soccer?

I know that sounds like a stupid statement but the sports are completely different and therefore should be given two different names. Even the wrestling that you see on TV is different than the wrestling you see at the Olympics and that's why they're calling it sports entertainment rather than wrestling.

But I don't think they should call soccer football. I think it should get its own identity. Maybe if they don't like the name soccer they could call it something else... but not football.
