pH is a measure of the acidity and the basicity/alkalinity of a solution in terms of activity of hydrogen (H+).

A pH scale is used to measure how acidic or basic a substance is. If it is basic, it usually turns blue and if it is acidic it turns red. But that is if you are using litmus paper. There are also scales, like you mentioned. They usually come with a key, however. If you only find the pH number through your scale, remember that if it is below 7 it is basic and if it is above 7 it is acidic. If it is 7, then it is neutral. All water should be neutral, but slight acidity or basicity (lol) may be present.

The acidity of something. It goes from 1-14, 7 is in the middle and is neutral, and any number greater than that is acidic, any number less is a base.
